Get Out (2017) is a strong and eerie thriller. This was Jordan Peele’s debut as a director and he exploded onto the scene. The movie has a ton of symbolism and great commentary on many issues in our world today. The movie is entertaining, fast paced, and surprisingly funny thanks to one of the best supporting characters I’ve seen in recent years. The ending is explosive and shocking and this movie is well worth your time.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004) is a romance movie that is more than certain to make you appreciate your significant other or even your ex. This movie focuses on the importance of memories and the impact they have on our lives. Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet create some of the best on screen chemistry I’ve ever seen. It makes you think and forces you to pay attention to the details, plus it is quite the tear jerker. Great for anyone, wether in a relationship or not, it will be sure to make you thankful for the people in your life and the memories you have with them.
Goodfellas (1990) is the crowning achievement of Italian mob movies. Many believe that would be “The Godfather”, but Goodfellas outpaces it at almost every turn. The storytelling is brilliant and there isn’t a dull character in the entire movie. There isn’t a ton of action, this would be more classified as a drama, but the intriguing dialogue and twists move this lengthy movie along at break-neck speed. Add on a career defining performance by Robert De Niro and your left with a true masterpiece.
American Beauty (1999) is an Academy Award Winning Drama and is one of the most intriguing movie I’ve ever watched. I had no clue what I was going to be watching when I first went into this movie and I think that just made it even better. It is part drama, thriller, and romance and it provides beautiful social commentary on the world around us. With an ending twist unlike any other, this movie is sure to please even the most common movie goers.
Skyfall (2012) is the masterpiece of the James Bond franchise, and that’s saying something considering the 30+ quality movies in the 007 storyline. Daniel Craig delivers the best Bond performance ever, but it is the villain in this movie that truly pushes it above and beyond. Raoul Silva (Javier Bardhem) stands out as the best Bond villain of all time and is truly a character that will make your skin crawl. This is a great movie for the whole family and contains some of the best cinematography you will ever see.
John Wick (2014) is a genre defining take on a classic revenge story. The plot doesn’t stray too far from what you would expect from a redemption/revenge story but it still finds ways to stand out. Beautiful stylized gunfights and brutal hand-to-hand combat take the forefront here. Keanu Reeves performs his best role since The Matrix and this film is more than worth your time. This is a movie that can be rewatched time and time again and it continues to impress.
Braveheart (1995) is one of my personal favorite movies. It is a winner of multiple Academy Awards, and boasts one of the most moving soundtracks in film history. It is one of Mel Gibson’s finest cinematic accomplishments, both as an actor and director. The story is very diverse, ranging from war, drama, and even a heartfelt romance. This is a perfect movie for date night, and I’m sure will be one of your favorites for years to come.
